Artifact of the Skylord

A few days after our adventure to the Lower South Cave to recover the Artifact of the Hunter, our tribe decided to locate another artifact. We knew of a cave not far from our village containing the Artifact of the Skylord, and began to stock up on arrows and other weaponry like the last time. Again, this cave was a relatively easy one, but there were several factors we had to take note of.

Being in the northern snow biome, temperatures were going to be very low and thus fur armour was essential. We also stocked up on torches and flame arrows, and grappling hooks, as we had read that there were some steep drops located inside. Navigating around the ice floes, we took our boat and also the two eagles (argentavis) as the entrace was located on a ledge halfway up a cliff. As before, beds were placed outside the entrance to act as a respawn point.

This cave consisted of very narrow, winding passageways requiring us to travel in single file. By sticking to the right-hand passage each time there was a fork, we made our way towards the artifact chamber, encountering a few spiders and also a large number of bats (onyc). If bitten by one, these bats have a chance of giving survivors the rabies disease, causing them to rapidly lose health and stamina. Though we had stocked up on antidotes to cure this if one of us became infected, we didn’t end up needing them. The cave creatures gave us little difficulty, however each of us died a couple of times from falling off of narrow ledges. The passageways are lined with deep chasms either side, filled with cruel spikes that deal 5,000 damage (an instant death). Of course, falling to our deaths made retrieving our loot difficult, hence the use of grappling hooks. The grappling hooks can be fired from a crossbow to attach to walls and ceilings or, as we discovered, attached to a tribe member to pull them up.

We reached the chamber without any further difficulties and collected the Artifact of the Skylord. Heading back to our village by raft, we decided to stop off on a nearby iceberg and explore a little; this iceberg looks like the ideal place to build on with a wide, flat area, an ice bridge/archway overhead, and plentiful oil deposits. It is also roamed by countless penguins (kaikuru) and we scooped up a few with the eagles to bring back to the village. George managed to tame a few, though this was quite a difficult task as it requires knocking them out. The penguins have very low health pools and unfortunately several were killed in the process!
